Daviess County cross country coach Mark Fortney was inducted into the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the Clarion Hotel Conference Center in Lexington on Jan. 4.

Fortney is currently in his 13th year of coaching the girls’ team and his third year of coaching the boys’ team at DCHS.

Fortney said the recognition was a humbling experience.

“There have been so many people that made this induction possible,” he said. “Starting with my wife and all her support over the years. My kids, past and present athletes, coaches and administration. So many made this possible.”

Fortney said it was a great honor being inducted into the 2020 class with the three other coaches.

“Having all my kids and wife present along with 20 other assistant coaches, parents and athletes made for a great ceremony,” he said.

Looking toward the future, Fortney said he still plans to coach and give back to the athletes he is surrounded by.

“Coaching is such a rewarding position to be in,” Fortney said. “I still have a passion to be involved with coaching young adults in the sport of running.”
