Lady Aces fall in All ‘A’ semifinals

Owensboro Catholic’s run at a repeat state title ended Saturday, as the Lady Aces struggled in a 60-41 loss against Walton-Verona in the All “A” Classic tournament semifinals at Eastern Kentucky University.

Catholic (15-8) jumped out to an early lead, using a pair of 3-pointers by Spencer Harvey and one triple from Catherine Head to go up 12-7 after the first period.

After a free throw by Isabella Henning put the Lady Aces up 16-10 with 7:01 left in the second period, Catholic’s offense went cold. The Bearcats (16-4) capitalized, going on a 10-0 run over the next five minutes.

Walton-Verona pushed their lead to eight points, but a layup by Henning got the Lady Aces within 26-20 heading into halftime.

The Bearcats used a 9-0 run in the third period to pull away. Haylee Neeley knocked down a 3 to put Walton-Verona up 36-24 with 3:52 to play, and they maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Catholic especially struggled on the boards and was outrebounded 44-20. The Bearcats turned 16 offensive rebounds into 22 second-chance points. The Lady Aces were also outscored in the paint 22-12.

Head led Catholic with 14 points, hitting four 3-pointers. Henning added 10 points, five steals and three assists.

As a team, the Lady Aces shot 15-for-48 from the field, also going 4-for-9 at the free throw line. Walton-Verona was 18-for-43 from the field, going 19-for-23 from the line.
