Owensboro’s Yarber qualifies for state bowling tournament

Owensboro senior Savanah Yarber is headed to the bowling state championships after finishing fourth individually in the Region 1 singles tournament Friday in Bowling Green. Yarber is the lone bowler to advance individually from any of the four local high schools.

Yarber was in fifth place with 510 pins after the first three qualifying games that narrowed the field to eight competitors. Her five-game total of 861 pins moved her into the top four, securing a spot at state.

Apollo’s Rikki Overall finished seventh among the girls with 825 pins in five games. Her three-game total was 484 pins.

Daviess County’s Seth Payne was in second place among the boys with 700 pins after three games, but he finished sixth with a five-game total of 1,038 pins. Teammate Jon Royal was seventh with a five-game total of 1,007 pins after knocking down 633 in his first three games.

Owensboro’s David Christensen was eighth after three games with 631 pins, finishing in the same position with a five-game total of 984.

Team competition in the region tournament begins Saturday morning, with boys’ competition beginning at 8 a.m. and the girls starting at noon. The top two boys’ and girls’ teams will advance to state.
