Apollo was simply dominant from start to finish Friday night, and the E-Gals ran away with a 74-38 home victory over Owensboro to continue a recent streak of impressive performances.

It was a far cry from the stunning 37-35 loss Apollo suffered to OHS earlier this year, and head coach Natalie Payne said it’s largely a result of a determined mindset the E-Gals have adopted.

“We were focused tonight,” she said. “We’ve been playing with a different intensity level. I think our full-court pressure has picked up and there’s more of a purpose with it.”

In what finished as another balanced attack, Apollo (17-6) was quick out of the gate to claim a 19-4 advantage after the first quarter. Zoe Floyd scored nine points in a 15-2 run for the E-Gals.

After Amber Dunn scored on a cut to the basket for a 28-7 advantage, Kassidy Daugherty drained three 3-pointers to push the lead to 37-9 with 2:55 left in the half. Owensboro’s Nia Gonzo scored five points in a 8-1 run, but Apollo’s Amaya Curry converted an and-1 for a 43-17 halftime lead.

Four more points from Gonzo to start the third quarter helped the Lady Devils get within 46-27, but Dunn and Amari Sanders each scored four points as the E-Gals pulled ahead 58-29 heading into the fourth.

Janaya Douglas scored eight points and Kennedy Rowan hit a pair of 3s as Apollo continued to pull away late.

“I feel like our kids are just confident in themselves,” Payne said of their ability to score with ease. “We do it in practice and it’s just carrying over.”

Dunn finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds, six steals and three assists. Daugherty scored a game-high 16 points, while Floyd added 12. Gonzo led Owensboro with 10 points, and Lyric Lawrence added seven.

Both teams are back in action Monday, when the E-Gals host Muhlenberg County and the Lady Devils travel to Breckinridge County.
