The Lady Aces maintained a slim margin for most of the game before relying on veteran star Hannah McKay late to put away a 64-41 road victory over Daviess County on Friday night.

With the win, Owensboro Catholic moves a step closer to locking up the No. 1 seed for the 9th District tournament.

McKay led the way for the Lady Aces (17-9) with 22 points and 10 rebounds, including a 7-0 run of her own in the fourth quarter that sealed the game.

“She’s just Hannah,” said head coach Michael Robertson. “She just goes. When we get out and run, she’s going to run with us and get easy buckets.”

The Lady Aces used their overall size advantage to dominate the glass and force turnovers, but the Lady Panthers (9-14) remained competitive through the first three quarters — DC trailed by five points at halftime and 10 points after the third quarter.

From there, Catholic’s extended defense was fully in sync and caused problems for the Lady Panthers. Behind a barrage of steals and easy buckets, the Lady Aces closed out the game on an 18-3 run to put away the scrappy Panthers.

“I think once we got after them with the press a little more, we sped them up and got stops,” Robertson said.

McKay led all scorers, while Spencer Harvey chipped in 10 more for Catholic. The Panthers were led by the sharpshooting of senior Emma Anderson, who drained four 3-pointers to finish with 12 points.

Owensboro Catholic returns to action Tuesday with a road game at Christian County. They’ll then play at Owensboro, where a win would lock up the top spot for the district tournament.

The Lady Panthers will play again Monday at Edmonson County.
