The brackets are set for next month’s state basketball tournaments. While area teams still have to focus on claiming the 3rd Region title first, they can get an idea of what to expect their first-round matchups.

The region pairings for the Sweet 16 were unveiled Tuesday during live drawings by the KHSAA. The girls’ tournament will be held March 11-15, while the boys’ tournament will take place March 18-22. Both tournaments will be played at Rupp Arena.

On the girls’ side, the 3rd Region champion will take on the winner of the 10th Region. Click here for their full bracket.

The race for the 3rd Region crown is a tight one. Apollo (18-6 overall, 11-2 region), Owensboro Catholic (17-9, 9-2) and Muhlenberg County (18-8, 9-2) currently lead the 3rd Region standings, but a handful of teams aren’t far behind.

The 10th Region frontrunner is Bishop Brossart with an overall record of 19-4 and a perfect 10-0 slate against region foes, though they’ve also got several teams with a shot to advance.

On the boys’ side, the 3rd Region winner will take on the champion of the 15th Region. Click here for their full bracket.

There’s no heavy favorite among the 3rd Region boys this year, but a group of five have established themselves as the teams to beat — Ohio County (20-5, 11-2), Owensboro (15-9, 8-1), Muhlenberg County (15-10, 9-2), Owensboro Catholic (16-9, 11-2) and Breckinridge County (16-7, 14-2).

Still, nearly every team in the region has a shot at the title and has pushed one of the top five teams in the standings.

The 15th Region also has a handful of teams near the top, but currently Shelby Valley (19-5, 14-2) ranks first in the standings.
