The following is from a Brescia Athletics press release:

The Brescia cross country programs recently announced additions for the 2020 season.

MEN
The men’s team added seven student-athletes.

“I am excited to see what each of these student-athletes can add to the team,” coach Luke Stoffel said. “The XC program has been steadily growing over the past couple years and I’m looking forward to seeing how much the team can improve this season.”

The incoming recruit class, one of the largest in program history, nearly doubled the size of the team.

The incoming freshmen are led by Christian Leach (Monroe HS, Monroe, Ohio), who expects to compete at the top of the River States Conference as a freshman. The program added several other student-athletes who have the potential to score for the program as well, including Wesley Abney (Logan County HS, Russellville, Ky.), Jeremy White-Zavala (Ohio County HS, Beaver Dam, Ky.), and Caleb Sandefur (Ohio County HS, Hartford, Ky.).

Keitel McCoy (Lithia Springs HS, Douglasville, GA), Draven Stewart (Grayson County HS, Leitchfield, Ky.), and David Turner (Hancock County HS, Hawesville, Ky.) will add competition to the team and continue to improve on their times. Stewart will help the jumps squad for the track & field team as well.

PRs:

  • Christian Leach: 16:26 (5k), 4:29 (1600m)
  • Wesley Abney: 17:52 (5k), 5:05 (1600m)
  • Jeremy White-Zavala: 18:21 (5k), 5:11 (1600m)
  • Caleb Sandefur: 19:17  (5k), 5:18 (1600m)
  • Keitel McCoy: 19:45 (5k), 2:15 (800m)
  • Draven Stewart: 21:04 (5k), 31-4 (triple jump)
  • David Turner: David ran track at Hancock County and will be running XC for the first time.

“We will have more competition for our top five spots this season,” Stoffel said. “I think the incoming freshmen will compete well with our returning student-athletes, including Benjamin Brown, Tyler Walz, Wes Wheatley, Ethan Dooley and James Barrow.”

WOMEN
The women’s team added four student-athletes.

“I am excited to see what the women’s team can accomplish this season,” Stoffel said. “We are a young team, but I believe we can surprise some teams in the River States Conference.”

The incoming class is led by Sophia Warthen (Elizabethtown HS, Elizabethtown, Ky.) and Lexi Nicholas (Hawesville, Ky.), who is transferring to Brescia from NCAA D1 Austin Peay State University. Prior to running at Austin Peay, Nicholas competed locally at Hancock County from 2012-2018.

Morgan Curry (Hancock County HS, Lewisport, Ky.) and Sheyenna Stytz (Livingston Central HS, Ledbetter, Ky.) will add competition to the team and continue to improve upon their times. Stytz will also add to the jumps squad during the track & field season.

PRs:

  • Lexi Nicholas: 20:49 (5k), 2:35 (800m)
  • Sophia Warthen: 20:49 (5k), 2:47 (800m)
  • Morgan Curry: 24:33 (5k), 6:22 (1600m)
  • Sheyenna Stytz: 24:36 (5k), 29-3.5 (triple jump)

“We will have more competition for our top five spots this season,” Stoffel said. “I think the incoming freshmen will compete well with our returning student-athletes, including Mckenzie Severs, Abagale Huelsman, Kaitlyn Alvey, Marianne Glaziner, and Raegan Halley.”
