The Daviess County cheerleading squad started their postseason run today when they went to Bowling Green and winning the Region 2 Gameday Division championship.

The Owensboro Red Devils finished fourth in Gameday and also advanced to state competition.

The Panthers have been hit with the injury bug this year but they still pushed through Saturday to claim the title.

“We had to change our routine around due to an unfortunate circumstance,” DC coach Kitty Jones said. “The mindset today was just to hit clean with the changes that happened on Sunday. We put one person in that was new and has been out for injury, hasn’t cheered all year. Then we put a new person in the air.”

Cheerleading wasn’t immune to Covid difficulties this year and with that plus their injuries, Jones said it showed her a lot about her squad.

“It’s been a very trying season,” she said. “We had at least four injuries where they couldn’t compete … This team has definitely shown they are strong and they can adapt well to change and excel. It shows how strong the team has become.”

Next up for the Panthers is the state tournament in May and Jones said her team always has some big ideas for the competition.

“State has been the goal all year,” she said. “We competed a couple of times and had good scores. We scores in the 90s again today and every competition we’ve competed in. Being in the 90s makes us a contender at state and the goal is to place at least top-five.”
