Owensboro Catholic is moving on to the championship of the 9th District Tournament after a 1-0 win in a crosstown pitchers duel with Owensboro Saturday at Shifley Park.

The Aces capitalized on the lone error in the ballgame from the Red Devils in the bottom of the second, taking a 1-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Finley Munsey was dealing for the Aces. He gave up one hit through six innings while striking out eight.

“Just [wanted] to get ahead of batters, get ahead in the count and throw strikes [and give up] no walks,” Munsey said… “[Our] defense played great behind me. We didn’t have an error and that’s huge.”

Ethan Gibson had also had an impressive day on the mound, escaping a small jam in the bottom of the sixth to finish the night by giving up one earned run on six hits, while striking out seven.

“He mixed it up,” Hibbs said. “His fastball is pretty good and he located it well. His curve I thought he kept us off-balance with a little bit, but the pitch to me was the changeup. He really did a good job locating it. He threw it for a strike when he needed to, spiked it in the dirt when he was ahead in the count and he got a lot of strikeouts on some of the core guys in our lineup.”

Munsey gave up his only hit in the top of the seventh, but the Red Devils couldn’t muster up enough offense, losing 1-0.

Blake Kimbrell had the lone of hits for the Red Devils.

E Munsey, Braden Mundy, Luke Scales, Sam McFarland, Luke Evans and Jamison Wall all registered a hit for Catholic, while Hunter Small came away with the only RBI of the game.

Red Devils coach Logan Johnson said they could’ve done things a little bit differently at the plate, but said that Munsey did a good job pumping his fastball in the zone and kept them off-balance.

The Red Devils season comes to a close with them owning a record of 6-21.  Johnson said now they look to the offseason ready to come back next year with more experience under their belts.

“Just getting these guys more experience over the summer,” Johnson said. “A lot of them have places to play and they’re going to get to see a lot more pitching.”

Meanwhile, Owensboro Catholic now heads to the 9th District Tournament championship and will take on the Apollo Eagles at 3 p.m. The two met once in the regular season, with the Aces coming out on top 7-2.

After advancing to the championship Hibbs said now the team just has to continue to take things step-by-step and not dwell too much on past games in order to come away victorious in their next game.

“When you get in the postseason like this, it’s survive and advance,” Hibbs said. “So, you know, we’re basically just playing game to game. We’ll talk about a few things from this game, but for the most part we’ll go past it and go to the next one.”
