The RiverDawgs came out on top of the Muhlenberg County Stallions on Sunday, grabbing the first off three straight matchups between the two at a score of 5-4.

After four scoreless innings to open play, both offenses seemed to flip a switch in the fifth inning, starting with the Stallions.

Colin Cornwell found his way on via error to leadoff the inning and Nick Lucido singled shortly after. With one swing of the bat, Mason Lundgrin put the first runs on the board with a three-run homer to left.

The RiverDawgs answered quickly, as Connor Zagrodnik singled and Kail Hill walked to begin the bottom of the fifth. A sacrifice bunt and a hit by pitch later and the bases were loaded for Tucker Hagan.

He came through with a sacrifice fly scoring one, followed by Hill who scored on an errant throw to make it a 3-2 game.

Paul Coumoulos came through the very next at-bat, giving Owensboro a 4-3 lead going into the sixth with a two-run bomb to right field.

An error in the top of the seventh came back to bite the RiverDawgs, allowing Muhlenberg to tie things at 4-4 because of the blunder.

Flash forward to the bottom of the eighth and Owensboro had the response they needed. A single followed by a fielder’s choice gave the RiverDawgs a runner on second with two outs.

Cole Gober came through with his only hit of the day when it mattered most, singling with two outs to give Owensboro a 5-4 lead

This would be more than enough for Drake Hamil to come in and close the door, giving the RiverDawgs the 5-4 win.

This marks the first of three straight games between the two teams, with the next game being played at 7:05 p.m. on Monday, June 14, at Muhlenberg County.
