Given the amount of time to prepare since regionals, Daviess County has been grinding to get ready to compete at the highest level.

“Since regionals we’ve had 17 days of great training,” Head Coach Mark Fortney said. “We have had 4-5 quality workouts that we have focused on good speed workouts, some tempo work with strength. This time period has really sharpened the kids up and they are ready to run some great races. The kids’ focus has been outstanding.”

With all of this training and momentum under their belt, Fortney has high hopes for the upcoming meet.

“We have a great crew competing and we are expecting several quality races in multiple events,” Fortney said. “We have a great shot of getting several athletes on the first team all state podium which is top 8 in each event. Competition is very tough however and everyone will need to be at their best to achieve all state status. Everyone seems to be up for the challenge. I feel we will set several personal best on Saturday”

Given that they missed a year of this meet because of COVID-19, Fortney and company are just really happy to be able to have a season as a whole.

“Coming off of Covid, there is plenty of excitement for the kids, Fortney said. A majority of our athletes competing tomorrow are seniors. To have a season of track has been a great Blessing for all. The kids and staff are thankful that they get to compete in this year’s State Track meet and everyone is looking forward to competing and giving their best effort.”

Owensboro will look to finish amongst the top-five in their respective events, just happy to have the chance to compete.

“We had 2 weeks to prepare since regions and we did a lot of speed work,” Hall said. “If we can finish in the top-five, I will be very happy. With all the covid stuff last year, the kids understand how lucky they are to be able to compete. I told them to take advantage of the situation and to have fun.”

Reece Carroll will compete in the 100 Meter Dash and the 400 Meter Dash, Nathaniel Turner will compete in the 800 Meter Run Zach Clark will compete in the 200 Meter Dash, Steven Stevenson will compete in long jump alongside Maurice Moorman, Gavin Wimsatt will compete in triple jump, Aiden Roberts will compete in pole vault, Javonte McHenry and Etan Pendleton will compete in high jump and Eli Early will compete in the 110 Meter Hurdles.
