Owensboro’s Boys Soccer Head Coach Ryan Haley is bringing back some Red Devils magic from past players at 7 p.m. with the Owensboro men’s alumni game.

Haley has organized the event since 2018, with it making its return after not having it in 2020 because of COVID-19.

The event had always been used as a fundraiser in the past, but the main focus of creating the event this year was to bring alumni back together.

“It became this thing this year where I just wanted to have it mainly just to see my former players,” Haley said. “For me I’m involved with them from sixth grade all the way up, so I have them and experience them for a very long time and when they graduate some of them just disappear like a magician’s show. So it’s a good way to get them back.”

While it was not made to be a fundraiser specifically, players registered by spending 25$ which will be put towards the boy’s soccer program in a multitude of ways. All in all, Haley is just happy to have the game, knowing it will be fun and competitive for all of those involved.

For the 27 players that have signed up, there will be two 40-minute halves with a 10-minute halftime for the two teams which will be drafted prior to the game at 7 p.m.

Haley said that once everything has been set up in terms of officiating, ball boys, etc., he just loves being able to spend time with former players and watch some good soccer and hopes others will too when the game kicks off at 7 p.m.

“[When] the game starts and all the work is taken care of and I can sit back and spend time with the guys,” Haley said. “Whether it’s coming off the field and they’re talking to me or whatever… When I’m sitting at that center table at half-field that’s my favorite part, because it’s happening,  all the work is done and everybody is having a good time and I get to enjoy it.”
