RiverDawgs one step closer to series sweep over Stallions

The Owensboro RiverDawgs grabbed its second straight win over the Muhlenberg County Stallions 8-4 thanks to a solid offensive performance.

After two scoreless innings to start play, Owensboro got on the board first courtesy of a two-out rally.

Seeming like the Stallions would blank the RiverDawgs for the third inning, a hit by pitch with two outs quickly changed things.

David Jeffers doubled during the next at-bat and another hit by pitch led to the bases loaded for Cole Gober.

Gober singled to left bringing two home, but a groundout followed, ending the two-out rally with Owensboro up 2-0.

The RiverDawgs nearly suffered a similar defeat in the bottom of the third, as Muhlenberg County had the bases loaded with two outs.

However, a fielder’s choice allowed one run and then Trent Hlafka escaped the inning, keeping Owensboro out in front 2-1.

The Stallions knotted things up at 2-2 with an RBI single from Colin Cornwell, but the RiverDawgs responded swiftly over the next two innings.

A game of two-out rallies continued in the top of the fifth, as multiple walks and an RBI single from Peyton Meredith led to a 3-2 lead. Then in the top of the sixth, Owensboro broke things open with another late-inning rally.

After back-to-back singles to start the inning, back-to-back strikeouts left runners on first and second with two outs.

Paul Coumoulos singled to load the bases before Gober came through with another clutch hit, bringing in one to make it a 4-2 game.

Back-to-back walks led to two runs crossing the plate, leading to a 6-2 ballgame before a single from Hayden Hirschvogel made it a 7-2 RiverDawgs lead going into the seventh inning.

After Owensboro scored one in the top of the ninth to make it an 8-2 ballgame, Muhlenberg County wasn’t going down without a fight.

A plethora of walks led to the bases being juiced, then another walk allowed another run to cross and make it an 8-3 game with one out in the inning.

A sacrifice fly and an errant throw allowed two runs to score shortly after en route to an 8-5 deficit, but Cody Hupp would close the door getting the last two outs.

Owensboro now rides a two-game winning streak, before taking on the Stallions for the third straight game and first of two on the road.

The two will meet up again for the series finale at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, June 16, at Muhlenberg County.
