Daviess County football opened up the season with a statement victory, defeating Meade County on the road 30-0.

The Panthers came ready to play early in the first quarter, using a 14-yard touchdown pass from Joe Humphreys to Carter Hamilton to kick things off and grab a 7-0 lead. Once Daviess County grabbed that lead, they never looked back.

The game was at a stalemate for much of the first half, as turnovers offensively kept Daviess County from converting multiple scoring opportunities.

The Panthers did get one before heading into the locker room, as Demarion Gardner had a short touchdown run for his first of the day and expanded their lead to 14-0.

In the second half it was all Daviess County, with another rushing touchdown from Gardner and a safety putting them up 23-0 going into the fourth quarter.

That was where Hamilton got his second touchdown of the day—first rushing—taking it 31 yards to secure the 30-0 victory for the Panthers.

While Humphreys threw the ball well and the Panthers running back by committee was successful, Brannon said they could’ve been much better and will have to fine tune things going forward.

“Offensively we sputtered…” Brannon said. “It was one of those situations where we didn’t take care of the ball, beat ourselves and kept the game close when it could’ve been ended a lot earlier than what we did.”

What Brannon was most pleased with on the night was their defense, which earned its first shutout since 2014.

“I’d say we played great defense tonight,” Brannon said. “This is the first time in several years where we shut out our opponent. It’s nice to be in a game, you know where the defense continued to give the offense the ball in great position.”

Now sitting at 1-0 to start the season, Daviess County will next host Owensboro Catholic at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 27.
