Lady Aces grab season-opening win over Apollo

Following a strong opening set from Apollo, Owensboro Catholic volleyball caught fire and won three sets to win its season-opening match (21-25, 25-17, 27-25, 25-13). 

The E-Gals came out of the gate looking to set the tone and grab its third straight victory, taking the first set 25-21.

However, the Lady Aces were full of energy in its first game of the year and bounced back to take the second set 25-17.

It took extra points to determine the third set, with Owensboro Catholic coming away victorious at 27-25, which ultimately swung the momentum of the game.

Fired up after back-to-back set wins the Lady Aces had completely taken control and took the wind out of Apollo’s sails in the fourth set.

Owensboro Catholic continued to string points together, taking the final set 25-14 and winning the match in four sets.

The Lady Aces were led offensively by Cate Sights in kills with 18, but it was Paige Miles and Kennedy Murphy who had the offense in sync. Murphy and Miles had all 56 assists for the team, finishing with 26 and 20 respectively.

Sights, Miles and Murphy were also key defenders in the game, earning 20, 15 and 15 digs each en route to the season-opening win.

Havanah John led the E-Gals in kills with 18, while Abby Spong led the way with 16 digs and Allie Hargitt shared the ball well with 32 assists.

The Lady Aces now have their first win under their belt and will look to make it two in a row against Trinity at 7 p.m. Thursday, while Apollo will hit the road to take on Henderson County at 7:30 p.m.
