Owensboro Catholic will look to grab its first win of the season this Friday when they take on undefeated Union County.

The Aces are coming off a tough loss to Daviess County in which Panthers quarterback Joe Humphreys tossed six touchdowns en route to a record night, and week one for Catholic resulted in a home loss to Apollo.

While their overall record may not show it, Head Coach Jason Morris said that this young team is playing very well.

“The scoreboard isn’t showing how well we are playing,” Morris said. “We are super young and the mistakes we are making are leading to points for the other team. I really like my team and have confidence in them.”

With that in mind, Morris said he’s expecting improvement over the course of practices and that his team is going into the game with a positive mindset.

“We expect to show great improvement from our young squad and to compete for four quarters,” Morris said. “As always, we are going into the game expecting to win.”

Union County has rolled past Madisonville-North Hopkins 28-0 and Hopkins County Central 34-15.

The Braves have a balanced offensive attack, though the running game is their bread and butter.

Corithian Seales-Portee has 156 rushing yards in two games, earning a large amount of action with 32 carries. He has four touchdowns on the season as well.

Cannon Sheffer holds things down under center, throwing for 235 yards in his first two games to go along with three touchdowns on 15-31 passing.

The Braves also have a slew of experience on their roster, something Morris said has really helped them be successful so far this season.

“Union County has benefitted from the fifth-year player option more than any team I have seen so far,” Morris said. “Their fifth-year left tackle and fifth-year running back are as good as they come. They are like men playing against boys.”

Against a team with this size and physicality, Morris said his team will have to do a good job of maintaining ball security and then wrapping up well defensively.

“Our biggest focus is on tackling and then just doing our individual jobs without being out of position,” Morris said. “Ball security and the ability to tackle their running back [will be key].”

Owensboro Catholic kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday as they host Union County.
