Volleyball recap (Sept. 16): DCHS, AHS, OHS, OCHS, THS

Local volleyball teams thrived on Thursday night, as Owensboro, Owensboro Catholic, Apollo, Trinity and Daviess County all came away with victories.

Daviess County vs. Ohio County

The Lady Panthers battled set after set with Ohio County to come away with a narrow sweep in three sets (25-21, 26-24, 25-19).

Daviess County came out looking to set the tone for the match in the first set, squeaking out a 25-21 win.

Looking to keep the Lady Panthers from taking all momentum, Ohio County put them to the test in the second set.

The two teams traded points back and forth, with Daviess County earning an extra point to win the set at a score of 26-24 to take a 2-0 lead.

This hard-fought win gave the Lady Panthers the confidence and momentum they needed to close out the match, winning 25-19 in the third set to sweep Ohio County.

Junior Josie Newcom led Daviess County offensively, recording 21 of their 38 kills on the night, while the second highest total was nine from junior Adylan Ayer.

Junior Lexi Owen was responsible for a vast majority of the kills, setting up her teammates time and time again with 33 assists.

All but two players recorded a dig for the Lady Panthers, while senior Kayla Clark led the way with 14. Newcom was second on the team with nine.

The win moves Daviess County to 12-7 overall on the season and they will look to extend its winning streak to four games when they go toe-to-toe with Owensboro for the second time this season at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Apollo vs. Hopkinsville

The E-gals had a strong offensive performance against Hopkinsville, winning all but the first set by double digits to sweep them in three sets (25-16, 25-4, 25-13).

Apollo came out of the gates setting the tone for the match, winning the first set 25-16 to take a 1-0 lead in the game.

With momentum completely on their side, the E-gals showed no mercy and won the second in 25-4 in dominant fashion.

Apollo wasted no time earning the straight sweep of Hopkinsville, handily winning the third set 25-13.

Senior Havanah John led the E-gals in kills, finishing with 21 kills. Senior Allie Hargitt was the second highest on the team in kills with four, but led the team with a whopping nine aces on the night.

Sophomore Ahalia Ramirez led the way with 29 assists on the day for Apollo, while senior Abby Spong recorded five digs.

The win snaps the E-gals two-game losing streak, as they sit at 7-11 going into their matchup with Owensboro Catholic at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Owensboro vs. Grayson County

Owensboro took the final two sets against Grayson County by double digits after narrowly winning the first set for the sweep (25-23, 25-14, 25-13).

The Lady Devils fought back and forth with Grayson County in the first set, with it coming down to the final points. Owensboro was able to get an edge on them, winning 25-23.

In the second set, the Lady Devils really picked up steam. They couldn’t be stopped offensively, winning back-to-back sets by double digits.

Owensboro grabbed the second set 25-14 and their offense continued to be dominant in the third set, winning 25-13 to earn the sweep.

A trio of Lady Devils did the damage offensively as junior Brooklyn Williams (12), freshman Maya Joska (10) and junior Mia Covington combined for 30 of the team’s 39 kills.

Defensively Owensboro was clicking on all cylinders, recording 60 digs. Sophomore Chase Mather (17)  and junior Kennedy Thompson (16) combined for 33 of the team’s 60 digs.

The win moves the Lady Devils to 12-6 overall, as they will look to get revenge when they take on Daviess County for the second time this season at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Owensboro Catholic vs. Henderson County

Owensboro Catholic wasn’t deterred from a second-set battle by Henderson County, sweeping the Lady Colonels in three sets (25-9, 25-22, 25-13).

The Lady Aces let their presence be known in the first set, dominating their way to a 25-9 victory.

Despite struggling mightily in the first set, Henderson County was going to let Owensboro Catholic walk over them.

The two teams went blow-for-blow during the second set, but the Lady Colonels couldn’t overcome the Lady Aces momentum and fell 25-22.

Owensboro Catholic wrapped up the three-set sweep following the tough win, defeating Henderson County 25-13 in the final set.

It was a familiar sight offensively for the Lady Aces, as senior Cate Sights led the way in kills with 17, while freshman Olivia Castien followed close behind with eight.

Junior Paige Miles helped set up a majority of Owensboro Catholic’s kills, recording a team-leading 20 assists. Sophomore Kennedy Murphy also got in on the passing action, recording 10 assists.

Junior Emily Christian led the Lady Aces in digs once again with 20, while Sights and sophomore Blair Riney both recorded 10 each.

The win moves Owensboro Catholic to 9-3 overall, while they will look to extend its winning streak to six games when they take on Clinton County at 6 p.m. in the All A State Tournament on Saturday.

Trinity vs. Edmonson County

Trinity stayed hot against Edmonson County, winning each set by double digits to earn the three-set sweep (25-8, 25-11, 25-9).

The Lady Raiders had no issues in the first set, coming out aggressive offensively to grab a 25-8 win.

Trinity had set the tone in the first set and didn’t take a step back, easily winning the second set 25-11.

With all momentum on their side, the Lady Raiders made quick work of Edmonson County and won the third set 25-9 to complete the sweep.

A trio of Trinity players led the way offensively, as senior Cassidy Morris (10), sophomore Hannah Nash (9) and sophomore Georgia Howard (7) combined for 26 kills on the night.

Junior Josie Aull helped set them up for kills all night, recording 27 assists. Meanwhile, junior Abby Payne led the way defensively with nine digs.

This marks the Lady Raiders third straight three-set sweep, as the move to 15-4 overall before taking on Grayson County on Monday at 5 p.m.
