Volleyball recap (Sept. 3 & 4): OHS, OCHS

Owensboro and Owensboro Catholic volleyball had successful weekends at the Jerry Mezur Spikefest, going 4-1 and 3-1 respectively.

Owensboro

The Lady Devils played three-set matches in the tournament, defeating Hopkinsville, Hancock County, McLean County and Henderson County.

Owensboro defeated Muhlenberg County handily, sweeping in two sets 25-8, 25-12.

McLean County couldn’t handle the Lady Devils offense either, falling to them in two sets 25-11, 25-14.

They went toe-to-toe with Hancock County battling to win in two sets 25-22, 25-17.

Owensboro then fought to beat Hopkinsville in the first set 25-22, before dominating them in the second set 22-9.

The Lady Devils lone loss of the tournament came against Henderson County, falling in two sets 15-25, 18-25.

Owensboro recorded 75 kills on the weekend, with Maya Joska, Mia Covington, Chase Mather and Brooklyn Williams finishing in double figures.

Joska and Covington combined for all but eight of the team’s assists, finishing with 27 and 24 respectively.

Kennedy Thompson led the way with 43 digs, while Mather and Hannah Ashley finished with 34 and 33 respectively. 

Joska, Covington and Addie McDaniel finished in double figures on the weekend as well.

Now sitting at 10-5 overall, Owensboro will return to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday when they take on Owensboro Catholic.

Owensboro Catholic

The Lady Aces had a strong showing in Henderson County, defeating Hancock County, Muhlenberg County and Hopkinsville.

They defeated Hancock County in swift form, winning 25-6 and 25-4 in two sets.

Owensboro Catholic had Muhlenberg County’s number as well, defeating them 25-9 in two straight sets.

On Saturday they fell to Henderson County in a tough match 25-27, 24-26.

However, the Lady Aces were able to close out the weekend with a win against Hopkinsville in two sets 25-7, 25-13.

Cate Sights led the way in kills recording 36, while also having 12 aces, six digs and five blocks on the weekend. 

Hadley Latham also finished in double figures in kills with 16.

Emily Christian had a solid weekend defensively, recording 37 digs, while Kennedy Murphy followed with 15.

Murphy also had a solid weekend offensively, recording 38 assists, seven aces and two kills.

Now sitting at 5-3 on the season, Owensboro Catholic will return home to host the Lady Devils at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
