Apollo split its matches on day two of the Quad State Tournament, while Owensboro and Owensboro Catholic went 1-3 to close out the weekend.

Owensboro vs. Jefferson, Marshall County, Clarksville & Piggot

Owensboro volleyball struggled on day two of the Quad State Tournament, going 1-3 with the lone win coming against Piggot.

The Lady Devils took on Jefferson first to start the day, falling in two sets. Jefferson came out strong in the first set, setting the tone for the match with a 25-15 win.

Jefferson carried that momentum into the second set of the match, as Owensboro couldn’t stop them en route to a 9-25 set loss for a 2-0 match loss.

Looking to bounce back from its loss against Jefferson, Owensboro battled with Marshall County in the first set but fell 25-22.

The Lady Devils went back and forth with the Marshalls in the second set, but couldn’t overcome their deficit and fell to 0-2 on the day after another 25-22 set loss.

Owensboro took on Clarksville in the following game, starting off strong by winning the first set 25-23.

Clarksville battled back in the second set of the match, knotting things up at 1-1 with a 25-18 win to shift momentum once again.

The two teams went blow-for-blow in the extra set, but Owensboro couldn’t muster up enough offense and fell 15-12 to lose the match to Clarksville 2-1.

The Lady Devils finished the day strong, sweeping Piggot in two sets. Owensboro opened up the first set with a dominant performance with a 25-13 win.

They were able to secure their first win of the day shortly after, as the Lady Devils won 25-20 to move to 1-3 on the day.

Freshman Maya Joska led the way offensively for the Lady Devils on Saturday, finishing with 19 total kills.

Sophomore Chase Mather (34) and junior Kennedy Thompson (33) led the way defensively, combining for a total of 67 digs on the day. Sophomore Hannah Ashley followed closely behind,  recording 10 on the day.

Following the Quad State Tournament, in which they finished 2-6 overall, Owensboro will turn its attention to its match up with Grayson County at home on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Apollo vs. Graves County, Christian Fellowship, Warren East & Carbondale

The E-gals went 2-2 on the day, defeating Graves County and Christian Fellowship before falling to Warren East and Carbondale.

Apollo was in a hard fought battle for the first set of the day, taking on Graves County and winning 26-24.

The E-gals carried their momentum into the second set, grabbing their first win of the day by sweeping Graves County with a 25-22 victory.

Apollo faced off with Christian Fellowship in the following match, needing an extra set to determine the winner.

The E-gals came out strong in the opening set battling with Christian Fellowship to earn a 25-23 win.

Looking to stay alive and force a third set, Christian Fellowship bounced to halt Apollo’s momentum in the second set by winning 25-19.

However, this didn’t deter the E-gals in the final set, winning 15-12 to defeat Christian Fellowship 2-1 to move to 2-0 on the day.

The day quickly took a turn for Apollo in its third match of the day after back-to-back wins, as they took on Warren East.

The two teams traded points back and forth, but it was Warren East who came out on top in the first set 25-20.

Apollo battled with Warren East fighting to force a third set, but they were unable to stifle East’s offense and fell 25-21 to lose the match 2-0.

The E-gals suffered a similar fate in their ensuing match with Carbondale, quickly going down 0-1 with a 25-17 loss in the opening set.

Apollo gave its all in the second set of the match, but was unable to halt Carbondale’s offense and fell 25-17 to move to 2-2 on the day.

The E-gals were led offensively by senior Havanah John who recorded 27 kills, with senior Maddi Boswell following closely behind with 13 kills.

Sophomore Ahalia Ramirez helped set up the offense all day long with 33 assists, while senior Allie Hargitt followed with 10 assists.

Sophomore Kaley Dickinson was the leader defensively with 18 digs, while sophomore Kelsey Dickinson and senior Abby Spong finished with 17 and 15 digs respectively.

Owensboro Catholic vs. Community Christian, Briar Crest, Ballard Memorial, Logan County

After a 2-0 start against University Heights Academy and Warren East on day one, Owensboro Catholic volleyball went 1-3 on day two of the Quad State Tournament.

The Lady Aces got off to a hot start on day two, coming out strong with a double-digit win of 25-9 to open their match against Community Chirstian.

Community Christian battled in hopes of forcing a third set, but Owensboro Catholic used its momentum to walk away with a 25-20 win to claim the match 2-0.

The Lady Aces didn’t find the same success in their following match, as Briar Crest dominated in the opening set 25-11.

Owensboro Catholic wasn’t able to flip the script in the second set, suffering a similar defeat with a score of 25-12 to move to 1-1 on the day.

The Lady Aces bounced back to start their third match of the day against Ballard Memorial, grabbing a 25-14 win.

Determined to keep the match going Ballard Memorial wouldn’t back down in the second set, narrowly defeating Owensboro Catholic 26-24.

The Lady Aces did all they could to come out on top in the final set, but Ballard Memorial had an edge and won 15-11 to take the match 2-1.

Owensboro Catholic took on Logan County for the final match of the tournament, falling 25-22 in the first set.

The Lady Aces forced Logan County to grab extra points to win the final set, falling 28-26 to move to 1-3 on the day.

Senior Cate Sights led the way offensively on the weekend, leading the team with a whopping 68 kills. Senior Hadley Latham and junior Paige Miles also finished in double figures, recording 28 and 11 kills respectively.

Sophomore Kennedy Murphy and Miles set up their teammates all weekend long, finishing with 65 and 48 assists respectively.

It was the typical suspect of junior Emily Christian leading the way defensively, recording 93 digs. Meanwhile, Sights (49), Miles (37), sophomore Blair Riney (28), Murphy (20), Latham (18) and freshman Olivia Castlen (14) all finished in double figures as well.

Owensboro Catholic finished the Quad State Tournament with an overall record of 3-3 and will now turn its focus to its next home match. The Lady Aces will return home to host Hancock County at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7.
