Owensboro vs. Marshall County

Second and third quarter struggles ailed the Red Devils despite their late comeback efforts, falling 69-60 to Marshall County in the Marshall County Hoopfest.

The Marshals got out to a slight lead after the first quarter, leading Owensboro 13-10 after the Red Devils got off to a slow start offensively.

In the second quarter Owensboro’s offensive woes returned, failing to score double digits in the quarter. Meanwhile, Marshall County’s offense remained steady, outsourcing them 17-9 and taking a 30-15 lead into the second half.

The Marshals shot 52% from the field in the first half, while hitting 42% from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Owensboro was unable to connect from deep and shot 34% from the field.

Marshall County stayed hot offensively in the third quarter, outscoring the Red Devils 24-16 despite Owensboro’s field goal percentage seeing a noticeable increase.

The Red Devils came roaring back in the fourth quarter looking to make a comeback, outsourcing the Marshals 25-15 and raising their field goal percentage for the second half to 61%.

However, it was too little too late for Owensboro, as the Marshals were able to fend them off and grab a 69-60 win in front of its home crowd.

Marshall County had a balanced attack, spreading the ball around with senior Kole Sedlock (19) and junior Wade Moore (17) being the only players to finish in double figures.

Sophomore Chris Glover led the way with 18 points, while senior Amari Wales (13), junior Kenyatta Carbon (13) and junior Jalen Rogers (11) all finished in double figures.

After suffering their first loss of the season the Red Devils sit at 2-1, as they will look to bounce back when they take on Daviess County on Friday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m.

Daviess County vs. Warren Central

A monstrous second quarter made the difference for Warren Central, stifling the Panthers offense as they fell 72-36.

The Dragons came out of the gates looking to set the tone for the game, jumping out to a narrow 10-6 lead over Daviess County.

In the second quarter the Panthers were able to break double figures with 10 points in the quarter, but Warren Central’s offense exploded. Its 33 points in the second sent them into the second half owning a dominant 43-16 lead.

Daviess County’s offensive struggles continued in the third quarter, being outscored 19-5 en route to trailing 62-21.

The Panthers were able to outscore the Dragons in the fourth by a score of 15-10, but their struggles up to that point were too much to make up for, falling 72-36.

Daviess County’s offensive struggles came via turnovers, as the Panthers had 22 while Warren Central had two. The Dragons also had 25 assists to Daviess County’s six.

The Panthers move to 1-1 overall on the season, as they will look to bounce back when host Butler County on Tuesday, at 7 p.m.

Owensboro Catholic vs Calloway County

Hanging on by a thread all game long, Owensboro Catholic’s fourth quarter struggles hurt them and led to a 55-44 Calloway County win.

The Aces got to a commanding start in the first quarter, as junior Jamison Wall and Jari Barber combined for 15 of their 19 points. Meanwhile they held the Lakers to nine points, going into the second up 19-9.

Senior Matthew Ray and freshman Conner Lockhart flipped the script for Calloway County in the second quarter, combining for 16 of the Lakers points. Holding Owensboro Catholic to 11, Calloway County still went into the second half trailing 30-29.

The Lakers were able to keep its offensive momentum going in the third quarter, outsourcing the Aces 17-10. With Calloway County up 46-40, it was a highly defensive fourth quarter.

The Lakers were only able to score nine points in the quarter, but Owensboro Catholic was only able to score, as they proceeded to lose 55-44. 

The Aces had two players finish in double figures, as sophomore Kaiser Frick and Wall finished with 14 and 12 respectively.

Now sitting at 0-3 to start the season, Owensboro Catholic will look to bounce back on Tuesday when they take on Evansville Bosse at 7 p.m.
