A rough third quarter came back to bite Trinity (Whitesville) on Monday, falling just short against Breckinridge County 71-67.

The Raiders got off to a strong start in the first quarter, finding ways to get to the rim while also knocking down a pair of threes to outscore the Fighting Tigers 17-12.

Trinity was able to continue its strong offensive play in the second quarter, but Breckinridge County found success on that end of the floor as well. Just barely outsourcing the Fighting Tigers 19-18 in the quarter, the Raiders went into halftime owning a 36-30 lead.

Breckinridge County came out of the locker room looking to flip a switch and did just that. The Fighting Tigers offense exploded for 27 points in the quarter, with junior Kolton Miller scoring 12 of the 27.

Meanwhile, Trinity’s offense faltered, as Breckinridge County limited the Raiders to just 10 points in the quarter and jumped out to a 57-46 lead going into the fourth.

Hitting a couple of threes and getting the foul line at will, Trinity’s offense came back alive in the fourth amidst a late comeback attempt.

However, despite outscoring the Fighting Tigers 21-14 in the fourth, the Raiders third quarter struggles ended up being the difference maker as they lost 71-67.

Miller led the way for Breckinridge County with 19 points, while junior Denver Dickens led the way for Trinity with 19 points as well.

The Raiders had two other players finish in double figures, including junior Landon Smith (12) and junior Nathan Hernandez (10).

Now riding a three-game losing streak, Trinity will look to bounce back when they take on Russellville in front of its home crowd at 7 p.m. on Monday.
