First half offensive struggles dug a deep hole for the Lady Aces on Sunday, which they were unable to climb out of as Sacred Heart nabbed a 72-43 blowout win.

Owensboro Catholic got off to a rough start in the first quarter, failing to crack double digits and went into the second trailing 13-5.

Freshman ZaKiyah Johnson helped the Valkyries expand their lead in the second quarter, scoring 10 points. With Johnson accounting for half of the team’s offense, Sacred Heart was able to hold the Lady Aces to single digits again and went into halftime owning a 33-14 lead.

Owensboro Catholic tried to battle its way back into the game in the third quarter by scoring 13 points, but were unable to halt the Valkyries offensive momentum and went into the fourth trailing 54-27.

The Lady Aces had their strongest quarter offensively in the fourth, but it was too little too late as Owensboro Catholic fell to Sacred Heart 72-43.

Johnson led all scorers with 18 points, while sophomore Reagan Bender finished with 14 points and sophomore Angelina Pelayo finished with 11 points.

Sophomore Hailee Johnson and freshman Karmin Riley were the only players to finish in double figures for the Lady Aces, as they finished with 12 and 10 points respectively.

The loss snaps a seven-game winning streak for Owensboro Catholic, as they will look to bounce back when they host Muhlenberg County at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
