RiverDawgs get revenge on Bombers, rally for first win of the season

offense came early and often for the Owensboro RiverDawgs on Sunday, as they slashed their way to a 12-8 victory over the Dubois County Bombers to grab their first win of the 2022 campaign.

While the Bombers grabbed the first run of the game with an RBI single from Seth Benner, it was Owensboro who caught fire in the bottom of the first. After a leadoff single and walk to start the game, Northwood University’s EJ Clark followed up a pop-up with an RBI single to knot the game up at 1-1.

Following a walk and a strikeout, Owensboro Catholic graduate Luke Evans singled to center to score two runs to grab the RiverDawgs first lead of the game. A run scored on a wild pitch the very next at-bat, sending Owensboro into the second inning owning a 4-1 lead.

The RiverDawgs added two runs in the bottom of the second thanks to a two-run single from Clark, but Dubois County added a run in the top of the third to cut it to a 6-2 game. The Bombers also got two runs in the top of the fourth, but Owensboro grabbed a run in the third and fourth to keep them in charge 8-4 going into the fifth inning.

Kaskaskia’s James Denten helped the RiverDawgs extend their lead in the bottom of the fifth, delivering a three-run shot to right to make it an 11-4 game. Dubois County wasn’t going away easy though, grabbing four more runs in the sixth thanks to a three-run single from Camden Gasser and an RBI single shortly after from Kasten Harvey.

Owensboro added an insurance run to make it a 12-8 game in the bottom of the eighth, but their lead was more than enough for Northwood University’s Myles Beale to close the door and now sit at 1-1 against Dubois County after losing to them11-1 on June 7.

Beale pitched an 1 ⅔ innings to wrap up the contest, allowing one hit and striking out two. Derek McCarley didn’t have his best stuff on the day but got the win, allowing four runs on seven hits, while walking two and striking out five.

Denten and Clark led the way at the plate with three RBIs each, while Evans had a pair and Jacob White and Ethan Plyler had an RBI each as well. Plyler, Clark and Evans also chipped in a pair of hits each on the day.

Now sitting at 1-9 overall, the RiverDawgs will get right back to action on the road against the Hoptown Hoppers at 6:30 p.m.
