Bombers set to battle for regional championship

After grabbing their second straight Championship, the Owensboro Bombers aren’t satisfied and are looking to grab a regional championship this week.

The Bombers were able to wrap up a best-of three-game series with the Lexington Post on Thursday, July 28, sweeping Lexington Post and earning back-to-back state championships with a 12-2 and 7-3 win.

“The boys are focused and playing hard-nosed baseball,” Freeman said. “We are excited about this opportunity to play on the national level. Representing the James L Yates American Legion Post 9 is an honor and we look to continue a long tradition of success.”

This isn’t the first time the Bombers will be competing for the regional championship, but is in recent times. Freeman and company have put a lot of hard work into maintaining success in the program, setting individual and team goals at the beginning of the season and Freeman said the kids stay focused on achieving them.  

“Our program has been building on each year’s success,” Freeman said. “The past two years we have had very talented players that are baseball savvy, good athletes with strong minds and bodies.”

Pitching and offense have been the Bomber’s strong suit all season long, with a number of experienced players getting it done at the plate and on the bump. Freeman said that in order to come 

“We have to put all three facets of the game together to be successful…” Freeman said. “In order to win at this level, we will have to play strong defensively. Limit errors and extra outs and we put ourselves in a great position to win each game.” 

The Bombers will open up play in the regional tournament that is running from Wednesday to Sunday by taking on Camden, South Carolina at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday.. The tournament is double elimination, as Owensboro will have an array of chances to move closer to winning a championship.
