Volleyball recap (Sept. 24): OCHS, AHS

The Lady Aces volleyball team had a successful weekend at wRECk at the Plex going 5-1, while Apollo went 3-2 in five games in the SOKY Slam at Allen County.

Owensboro Catholic vs Crittenden County, Christian Fellowship & Christian Community School (Tennessee)

After going 2-0 on day one of wReck at the Plex on Friday, Owensboro Catholic volleyball followed it up by going 2-1 in three matches on Saturday.

The Lady Aces made quick work of Crittenden County, grabbing a 2-0 sweep (25-13, 25-10) while getting seven kills from junior Blair Riney and 10 digs from senior Emily Christian leading the way. Owensboro Catholic didn’t have the same luck against Christian Fellowship, forcing a third set but falling 1-2 (14-25, 25-22, 16-17).

But the Lady Aces closed out the tournament strong, defeating Christian Community School 2-0 (25-14, 25-20). Sophomore Jaiden Grant led the way with seven kills, while junior Kennedy Murphy added 20 assists and Christian added 12 digs.

Owensboro Catholic advances to 11-7 overall following the 5-1 weekend, as they will hope to take that momentum into a district matchup with Daviess County at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Apollo vs. Edmonson County, Russell County, Campbellsville, Grayson County & Franklin-Simpson

The E-gals volleyball team went 3-2 in the SOKY Slam at Allen County on Saturday, defeating Edmonson County, Russell County and Franklin-Simpson 2-0, while falling to Campbellsville and Grayson County.

Sophomores Abbie Butterworth and Ava Fazio led the way in kills on the day with 28, while junior Jennifer Lee followed close behind with 23 kills and a whopping 23 blocks. Fazio also chipped in 11 blocks, while freshman Elise Wilson also added 14 kills.

Junior Ahalia Ramirez had a big day as well, dishing 115 assists while tallying nine aces. Juniors Ella Alvey and Kaley Dickinson led the way defensively with 38 digs each, while junior Kelsey Dickinson followed close behind with 34.

Apollo improves to 11-10 overall following the tournament, as they will look to stay strong on Tuesday in a district matchup with Owensboro at 6:30 p.m.
