Owensboro Catholic opened up its season with a dominant win on Tuesday night, defeating Greenwood by double digits while Apollo fell on the road to Evansville Christian.

Owensboro Catholic vs. Greenwood

Senior Brian Griffith led a balanced offensive attack for the Aces on Tuesday night, helping them grab a 72-53 victory over Greenwood at home.

Griffith kickstarted the Aces offense in the opening quarter, grabbing eight of the team’s 16 points. He grabbed eight more in the second quarter, while junior Tutt Carrico matched him as they combined for 16 of the team’s 21 en route to a 37-24 lead at halftime.

Owensboro Catholic’s offense didn’t slow down in the second half either, outscoring the Gators 35-29 to wrap up their first win of the season at 72-53. Griffith led the way with a whopping 28 points in the first game of his senior year, while Tutt had 13 and senior Noah Johnson had 11.

The Aces start the year with a 1-0 record, as they will have a few days to prepare for their Saturday matchup with Butler County at 7:30 p.m. at home.

Apollo vs. Evansville Christian

The Eagles couldn’t muster up enough offense on Tuesday night, as Josiah Dunham’s 24-point game led Evansville Christian to a 55-44 win.

Apollo didn’t get off to a strong start, as they were held to single digits in the first and second quarter. Dunham went off for 21 points in the first half as well, giving Evansville Christian a 34-17 lead going into the locker room.

The Eagles were able to come out of halftime and outscore Evansville Christian in the second half 27-21, but it was too little too late as Apollo fell 55-44 at home.

Seniors Jaren Stites and Donte Dixon led the Eagles as the only players in double figures, finishing with 11 and 10 respectively. Apollo will have a short break to regroup now, as they will look to bounce back in their second straight road game when they take on Webster County at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
