Apollo girls basketball wasn’t able to hang onto its first-half lead against Union County on Monday, while Owensboro Catholic and Owensboro grabbed impressive wins in their season openers.

Apollo vs. Union County

Short-handed in their regular season opener due to multiple players being sick, the E-gals couldn’t hang on in the second half of a 50-36 loss to Union County on Monday.

Apollo had themselves out in front following the first half of play, using a combined 10 first-half points from sophomore Heleina John (six points) and junior Taraya Thompson (four points) to take a 19-16 lead into the locker room.

The Bravettes came out of halftime on fire, as senior Madison Morris’ six points and three team three’s in the quarter led to 21 points and a 37-29 lead going into the fourth. Apollo didn’t have much better luck in the final quarter of play, tallying just seven points as they fell 50-36 in the season opener on the road.

John was the only player in double figures for Apollo on the night, while junior Jennifer Lee and freshman Abby Sapp helped lead the way on the glass by having nine rebounds each to go along with six and five points respectively. The E-gals open the season at 0-1, but did not have Jenna Dant or Gizelle Whitlock dressed because they were sick.

Apollo will hope to get them back soon and grab its first win of the season on the road, as the E-gals will face off against South Warren at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

Owensboro vs. Evansville Bosse

The Lady Devils were clicking on all cylinders in their season opener at home on Monday, as four players scored in double figures en route to an 86-20 win over Evansville Bosse.

Evansville was never able to eclipse more than seven points in a quarter as a team, while Owensboro had 13 players score with 14 threes as a team. Freshman Unique Carter-Swanagan led the way with 13 points, while senior Lindsey Gibson had 12, senior CJ Paige had 11 in her Lady Devils debut and junior Trinity Hogg had 10 points as the last of the fourth to finish in double figures.

The Lady Devils open up the season sitting at 1-0 with a quick turnaround, as they will have their first tough road test of the year when they take on Ohio County on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Owensboro Catholic vs. Castle

The Lady Aces used solid defense and an offensive outburst in the fourth quarter to come away with the win on Monday night, defeating Castle at home 49-31.

Owensboro Catholic went into halftime owning a 23-13 lead on the backs of its defense, having held Castle to single digits in both quarters. They continued to do so coming out of the locker room, limiting Castle to eight points again and building the Lady Aces lead to 29-21 going into the fourth.

Sophomore Karmin Riley then caught fire in the final quarter of play, rattling off eight points of their 20 as a team. Having held Castle to 10 points, they were able to put the game away and open the year up with a 49-31 home win.

Riley led the way with 14 points on the night, while junior Hailee Johnson followed close behind with eight points. Owensboro Catholic starts the year 1-0 and will now have a few days off before returning to the hardwood, as they will travel to take on Webster County at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 1.
