Daviess County and Owensboro girls basketball grabbed wins on Tuesday night, while Trinity (Whitesville) struggled defensively in its season opener against Hancock County.

Daviess County vs South Warren

Senior Adylan Ayer stepped up for the Lady Panthers with a strong third quarter on Tuesday night, helping them open the season with a 46-42 over South Warren in front of their home crowd.

The two found themselves tied going into halftime at 19-19, with Daviess County and the Lady Spartans holding each other to single digits as a team in a quarter each during the first half. But the Lady Panthers caught a spark in the third quarter, getting 10 of their 17 points from Ayer.

This would be the difference maker, as Daviess County went on to outscore South Warren in the second half 27-23 en route to the 46-42 win. Sophomore Zoey Beehn was the only other Lady Panther in double figures with 10, while senior Madison Spurrier was close behind with nine and freshman Briley Henry had seven.

Daviess County starts out the season 1-0, as they will now take a few days to prepare for their second game of the season against Bullitt East at 9 a.m. on Saturday in the Independence Bank Tip-Off Classic.

Trinity (Whitesville) vs Hancock County

The Lady Raiders were unable to stifle Hancock County’s offense on Tuesday night, as the duo of Bailey Poole and Ella House led the Lady Hornets to a 68-40 win.

Hancock County got off to a scorching hot start, as Poole (12) and House (8) combined for 20 of the team’s 26 points in the first quarter. Trailing by 13 the Lady Raiders luck wasn’t much better in the second quarter, as they were held to single digits and gave up 22 points to head into halftime down 48-21.

Trinity’s offense slowed even more in the third quarter, scoring just four points and ultimately falling to the Lady Hornets 68-40 on the night. House led all scorers with 19 points in the game, while Poole had 16 and senior Emma Morris had 11.

Senior Josie Aull led the Lady Raiders with 17 points, while sophomore Kenzie McDowell was the only other player in double figures with 13. Trinity now has a day to regroup, as they will return to action at home against Muhlenberg County at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Owensboro vs Ohio County

The Lady Devils offense was clicking on all cylinders on Tuesday night, as they shot their way to a dominant 67-39 road win over Ohio County.

Owensboro got off to a strong start in the first half, scoring 20 points each in the first and second quarter. Holding the Lady Eagles to just three points in the first quarter proved to be crucial, allowing the Lady Devils to lead by 27 at halftime.

Owensboro kept its foot on the gas in the third with 21, helping them eventually close the door on the 67-39 win. The Lady Devils had nine different players score on the night, while freshman Unique Carter-Swanagan (14) and junior A’Lyrica Hughes (11) were the only two to finish in double figures.

Owensboro now has a short break after grabbing back-to-back wins to start the season, as they will return to action looking to stay undefeated in the Independence Bank Tip-Off Classic against Christian County at 7 p.m. on Friday.
