Trinity (Whitesville) and Apollo couldn’t muster up enough offense in its respective losses on Thursday, while Gage Phelps’ near 40-point performance and strong fourth quarter effort led the Panthers past Metcalfe County.
Trinity (Whitesville) vs. South Spencer
The Raiders couldn’t slow down South Spencer in the fourth quarter on Thursday, ultimately falling 63-52.
Trinity (Whitesville) got off to a slow start, as they were held to single digits in the first quarter. But the Raiders were able to outscore Souther Spencer 28-22 combined over the second and third, cutting their deficit to 39-37 going into the fourth.
South Spencer would not be deterred though, as they sank 14 of their 18 made free throws in the contest in the fourth to wrap up the 63-52 win. Senior Landon Huff led Trinity with 16 points in the game, while fellow seniors Gavin Howard and Nolan Mills finished with 14 and 11 respectively as the Raiders fell to 5-3 overall with the loss.
Apollo vs. East Jessamine
The Eagles didn’t have an answer for East Jessamine defensively on Thursday, falling on the road 88-64.
The Jaguars caught fire from deep in the first half, drilling six threes to help them build a 45-30 halftime lead over Apollo. The Eagles were able to hold East Jessamine to just two threes in the second half, but were still outscored 43-34 and lost 88-64.
The Jaguars had four players finish in double figures in the game, while senior Donte Dixon had 24 points and freshman Kobe Kelly added 14 as the only two Apollo players in double figures. The Eagles fall to 0-8 with the loss, as they will look to bounce back for their first win of the season against Greenwood on Dec. 28.
Daviess County vs. Metcalfe County
Junior Gage Phelps had a career high 38 points against Metcalfe County on Thursday, helping the Panthers come away with a 65-58 win in the Rafferty’s Caveland Classic.
Phelps had 24 points through the first three quarters of play, but couldn’t find enough offense elsewhere and went into the fourth trailing 47-42. But the junior guard dropped 13 of Daviess County’s 23 in the fourth, while limiting Metcalfe County to a game low 11 points in the quarter to complete the 65-58 comeback win.
Phelps was the only player to finish in double figures for the Panthers, while junior Luke Floyd added eight points and junior Houston Oberst drilled a pair of threes en route to eight points in the fourth as well. Daviess County improves to 3-6 overall with the win, as they will look to keep things rolling in the Owensboro Health Holiday Classic at Grayson County against South Warren at 1 p.m. on Dec. 28.
