Following a spectacular senior season in which he helped Owensboro bring home some hardware after a long postseason run, Kenyatta Carbon has been named the 2022 Offensive Player of the Year.

Carbon dominated defenses out of the backfield all season long, rushing for 118.3 yards per game as well as two touchdowns per game. The senior said he is very thankful to receive the award during his final year at Owensboro and is happy to see that all the hard work they have put in showed.

He played in 12 games this season, totaling 24 rushing touchdowns and 1,420 rushing yards on 159 carries. Kenyatta was also the fourth leading receiver on the team with 14 catches for 201 yards and a touchdown, while grabbing two interceptions defensively as well this year.

While Carbon and the Red Devils fell short of their goal to make it to the state championship game, he said their preparation for games along with the help of his teammates allowed them to have a special season.

“Going with the game plan, playing hard every game and in practice,” Carbon said. “Our offensive line has been great this year. Just me going hard every single game, and getting good blocks from my teammates.”

The running back was part of a special senior class that finished 11-3 this year, giving them a career record of 65-8 to go along with four straight region titles. Carbon still has plenty of basketball left to play in his high school athletic career, but he is proud of what he was able to accomplish alongside his friends and teammates and is always going to miss suiting up under the Friday night lights for the Red Devils.

“I’ll miss playing with the guys, waking up at five in the morning and Friday nights,” Carbon said. “It has meant a lot to me. It means a lot to put on an Owensboro jersey.”
