The Owensboro Red Devils couldn’t get much going in the first half and fell into a big hole early, eventually falling 35-14 on the road against defending 5A state champion Bowling Green.
OHS (0-2) pushed the ball to the Purples’ 31 on the opening drive but they turned it over on downs. Bowling Green (2-0) took advantage, marching the other way and taking a 7-0 lead with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Deuce Bailey to TreTavion Barber late in the opening quarter.
The Purples doubled their lead on the first play of the second quarter with an 18-yard passing touchdown. Another pair of touchdowns over the next few minutes pushed the lead to 28-0.
With less than a minute remaining in the half, OHS punted the ball away and Bowling Green took over on their own 46-year-line. On the next play, Barber caught a short pass and weaved his way through the defense to find the end zone for the third time, giving the Purples a 35-0 advantage at the half.
Owensboro got on the board when Trevor DeLacey connected with Kingston Dillard for a 65-yard touchdown with 3:52 to play in the third quarter.
The final score came when DeLacey carried it in from 9 yards out with 3:52 to play.
DeLacey finished 8-for-19 with 113 yards and an interception, adding four carries for 18 yards. Evan Hampton led the way on the ground with 13 carries for 70 yards. Dillard caught four passes for 90 yards and a score.
Defensively, Tee Green recovered a fumble and Kaden McKnight had six tackles.
Owensboro will return next week to host Daviess County (0-2).
