Owensboro High School’s boys’ golf program is off to one of its best starts in school history. On Friday, they won the Daviess County Invitational, marking their fourth team win in six tournaments.
Leading the way has been Nolan Warren, who won his third individual title.
“He’s been so steady – never too high and never too low. He’s fun to watch,” said head coach Pat Hume.
Will Rickard entered the tournament in the team’s fourth spot but ended up firing off an even-par 71, which was good enough for fifth place overall. He was followed by Jax Malone, who had a 14th-place 75, and Will Hume, who had a 16th-place 76.
“These guys have improved so much. In the past, when they’ve gotten in trouble, they were taking double and triple bogies,” Hume said. “They’ve eliminated that. Now, they’re taking bogies and bouncing right back with birdies.”
Hume said he’s looking forward to returning to school so his squad can return to practice and play 9-hole matches, where they can fine-tune some things.
Daviess County’s Grant Broughton shot a third-place 69, while the Panthers finished sixth as a team. Logan Mewes was the Panthers’ number two with a 74, good enough for 13th place overall.
Hancock County finished tied for seventh, led by Jacob Shultz’s 10th place 73. Fellow Hornet Dec Lewko shot a 76.
John Wathen’s 79 led Owensboro Catholic to a 10th-place finish. Apollo finished in 23rd.
