The Daviess County boys’ soccer team had a bit of a letdown in the regular season finale on Tuesday, falling to South Warren 4-1.

“We seemed out of sorts,” Daviess County head coach Doug Sandifer said. “It wasn’t a good performance on the last night of the regular season, but we start fresh on Thursday and will get ready for the district tournament.”

It took South Warren only seven minutes to get on the scoreboard, but the Panthers tied it up four minutes later. Attacking the middle of the field, Jack Quisenberry found an open Carter Payne who buried it. Daviess County was unable to capitalize on the momentum and South Warren quickly took the lead back.

In the 21st minute, Panther’s goalie Harris Dunaway unwittingly left the goal to make a save but missed, and the ball slowly trickled in to put South Warren up 2-1. Despite the mistake, Dunaway was the reason the game wasn’t a blowout early, recording three saves in the first nine minutes.

Two minutes later, South Warren took a 3-1 lead which they carried into halftime. South Warren scored their fourth goal of the game in the second half and the Panthers were unable to respond due to the intense defensive pressure thrown their way.

Henderson County 3, Owensboro 1

A sluggish first half doomed the Red Devils, falling to Henderson County 3-1. Byruhanga Mutabazi assisted Denis Juma for the team’s lone goal, while goalie Landon Black finished with 10 saves.

“We had a slow start allowing Henderson to score early,” Owensboro head coach Ryan Haley said. “They did a good job keeping numbers back and limiting our attacking chances. I thought our guys played a much better second half. If we played that way in the first, tonight may have ended differently.”
