The Daviess County cheer team claimed their fifth region title over the weekend, finishing first in the Game Day Large division at the Region 2 cheer competition. The Lady Panthers also finished second in the All-Girls Medium division.
“It did not come easy. Our program worked very hard and pushed through lots of change this season,” Daviess County coach Kitty Jones said. “Unfortunately, we have had multiple injuries and worked through changing our routines multiple times. Our alternates stepped up and some were out of their comfort zone trying new things to pull it all together. Sally Ward and I took over the program in 2019 and are currently in our seventh year of coaching together alongside two newer coaches Dakorria Singleton and Rachelle Johnson. Our staff, the athletes, and the development of a great support system all contribute to the success of this program. Our expectations are high, but we have a good balance of fun along the way.”
Next up for the Lady Panthers is the UCA Nationals Qualifier in Lexington on November 24, when they will compete for a chance to advance to Nationals in both divisions. They will also be attending the KHSAA state competition on December 13-14 and are viewed as contenders for the state title.
“Leading up to our regional competition, we collectively came together with our local cheer community and practiced all together with plans to continue to collaborate throughout the season,” Jones said. “We hosted Owensboro, Apollo, Owensboro Catholic, Burns Middle School, Daviess County Middle School, and College View Middle School with coaches supporting each other and providing feedback. We all want each other to do well and it showed at our regional competition as our neighboring teams were each other’s biggest and loudest fans.”
Also competing in the Game Day Large division was McLean County, who finished fourth. Owensboro finished third in the Co-ed division and fourth in the All-Girls Small division. The Lady Devils Co-ed team will also be advancing to the state competition.
Competing in the Game Day Small division, Apollo finished third, Hancock County came in 11th, and Owensboro Catholic was 16th.
