Apollo fell behind early and was never able to catch up in a 38-7 loss at South Warren in the 5A football state playoffs on Friday, ending the season for the Eagles.
The Spartans (10-1) used a steady attack to score on their opening drive, adding a second touchdown and a field goal for a 17-0 lead over Apollo (5-6). South Warren continued to pour it on the second quarter, extending their lead to 38-0 by halftime.
Apollo got on the board in the third quarter with an 80-yard drive that ended with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Max Johnson to Ross Milburn. Noah Crider’s extra point cut Apollo’s deficit to 38-7, and neither team scored again.
Johnson finished 10-16 with 123 yards passing, and Niles Board had six carries for 74 yards.
“I’m proud of our players and this senior group,” head coach John Edge said. “They did a great job getting our program in the right direction. We have a lot of underclassmen for next year.”
