After taking a 7-6 lead halfway through the third quarter, Daviess County ran out of steam, falling to North Hardin 27-7 in the first round of the 6A playoffs.
“While tonight’s result is certainly disappointing, I do believe we had a solid season overall,” Daviess County head coach Anthony Payton said. “We faced a lot of challenges including implementing a new offense, adjusting to a new coaching staff, and working with two young quarterbacks who were still finding their rhythm.”
The Panthers’ defense held the Trojans’ offense in check throughout the first half, only allowing six points on a 26- and 30-yard field goal. Offensively, Daviess County wasn’t able to find its footing, turning it over on downs, missing a field goal, and getting picked off in the red zone. Despite the early struggles, they entered halftime only trailing 6-0.
Starting with the ball in the second half, the Panthers marched 69 yards, with Garrison Barker finding Jace Hunt for a five-yard touchdown and a 7-6 lead. Eight plays later, the Trojans retook the lead 14-7 on a fake punt that led to a 52-yard touchdown throw and a successful two-point conversion.
Despite only trailing by seven entering the fourth quarter, the game slipped away from the Panthers. They allowed two more touchdowns, threw an interception, and turned it over on downs.
Barker finished 17-28 for 91 passing yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions while adding 17 yards with his legs. Gatlin Maysey led the Panthers on the ground with 47 yards. Daviess County’s defense picked off two passes and allowed 264 yards.
“It’s important to recognize that this season was about growth,” Payton said. “We learned valuable lessons that will pave the way for their future success. I am excited about what lies ahead as we continue to build on this foundation together. The effort these guys put in can’t be overlooked and I am grateful for their commitment and hard work every single day.”
