In the season opener for the local teams, Apollo beat Trinity (Whitesville), while McLean County and Owensboro Catholic both lost.
Apollo 3, Trinity (Whitesville) 0
Avery Gray finished with a team high 14 kills and five blocks and added eight digs and four service aces to power the E-Gals past Trinity (Whitesville) 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-8). Maddi Roberts finished with 21 assists, while Keelan Wettstain added nine service aces and nine digs. Jessie Pate also recorded nine digs, and Jessica Lee had eight assists and a kill.
“It was a good home opener for us,” Apollo head coach Mary Howard said. “We battled through some adversity with an injury in the second set, but the girls rallied and stayed focused to the end. Our serving led the way for s throughout the night.”
For the Lady Raiders, Ava Coomes finished with a team high five kills and added a pair of blocks, while Emmy Edge finished with 10 assists. Laney Mills and Annie Coomes led the team in digs and blocks with four and three respectively, while Gracie Mills finished with four kills and two service aces.
“Overall, I thought we played okay at times,” Trinity (Whitesville head coach Adam Huff said. “Apollo was aggressive at every level with their serves and attacks. We weren’t able to be the aggressor enough to get the momentum. We will get better from it and move on to the next.”
Hopkins County Central 3, McLean County 1
The Lady Cougars won the opening set, but were unable to fully carry over the momentum, losing to Hopkins County Central 3-1. Annie Shelton and Savannah Blades both finished with five kills, while Hadley Young recorded five kills and five digs. Abbi Shivers led the team in service aces with nine and added three kills.
Bowling Green 3, Owensboro Catholic 0
Mayme Powell recorded a team high 10 assists and added a service ace and Talor Clark finished with five service points in the Lady Aces 3-0 (13-25, 19-25, 14-25) loss to Bowling Green. Addie Oller recorded three service aces and one dig and Molly Arnold had five digs and one assist. Payton Arnold added six digs and Emma Castlen had two service aces and one dig.
“I believe we learned a lot about ourselves and what we need to work on to compete with the bigger teams,” Owensboro Catholic head coach Brian Hardison said. “Without our other middle, we had to run different lineups, but we have to be ready for that to happen.”
