Owensboro Catholic clicked on all cylinders Friday night, rolling past 6A Meade County 61-7 behind a barrage of explosive plays and a stingy defense.
The Aces moved to 5-1 on the season with the non-district win.
Senior wideout Xavier Maddox led the way with three touchdowns, including a 70-yard catch-and-run on a screen pass in the first quarter. Senior Hudson Ebelhar added two scores, and senior running back Miles Edge punched in a pair of rushing touchdowns, including one set up after senior Jude Cecil nearly returned an interception for six.
Freshman Frank Igleheart delivered one of the night’s highlights when he scooped up a loose ball and raced about 60 yards for a defensive touchdown.
Junior quarterback Dremail Carothers spread the wealth, hitting multiple receivers throughout the game. Reserve quarterback Peyton Morris connected with freshman Kobi Mitchell in the third quarter on a 40-yard RPO pass.
Sophomore Noah Grant helped turn the tide defensively with two interceptions.
“We played in every aspect of the game, and everything we did had an emphasis to stop their run game and make them one dimensional,” head coach Jason Morris said. “Offensively, we just played with tempo and wore them down. We spread the football aroun and all four receivers played really well as well as the running backs and offensive line. They did a really good job of keeping Carothers upright.”
Morris said the win was important as a confidence boost heading into the meat of district play, but consistency remains the biggest goal.
“Hopefully we can keep that trend together and not be so up and down,” Morris said. “Consistency is key with this team. I do feel like we have the pieces to be a really, really good football team.”
Owensboro Catholic begins district play next week against Hancock County at Steele Stadium.
