The Daviess County Gun Club has been renamed in honor of retiring Judge-Executive Al Mattingly. The facility will now be called the Mattingly Target Shooting Range at Pup Creek Park.

Daviess County Fiscal Court voted 3-1 in favor of the name change — with Mattingly casting the dissenting vote — during their meeting Thursday.

A new sign was unveiled and presented to Mattingly, who thanked the commissioners and head of the gun club for the honor.

“This is something. You all know I enjoy shooting, competitively and recreationally. I’ve done so since at that gun club since it opened in 1967,” Mattingly said.

In a post to Facebook Thursday evening, gun club officials wrote that Mattingly’s “lifelong experience as a competitive shotgun shooter and his professional leadership in Daviess County government has led to a unparalleled local experience for Daviess County citizens to enjoy the sport of skeet, trap, and sporting clays.”

This meeting was the last for the current Fiscal Court, so several community partners were in attendance to show appreciation and offer gifts to the outgoing officials. Commissioners George Wathen and Mike Koger and County Attorney Claud Porter gifts from the Fiscal Court and the Kentucky House of Representatives.

State Representatives Suzanne Miles and DJ Johnson presented Commissioners George Wathen and Mike Koger with Citations of Appreciation for the work they had accomplished in their time on the commission.

Mattingly also received a Citation of Appreciation following his dozen years as the top county official.

“This is in honor of your hard work and an appreciation for you not only as a public servant but also as our friend,” Miles said to Mattingly. “I think it’s very appropriate for us to recognize what you have achieved as my friend and we so appreciate everything that you have done for the citizens of Daviess County.”
