The Lady Raiders and Lady Devils were firing on all cylinders on Wednesday in their respective wins, while Owensboro Catholic’s spring break struggles continued into their fifth straight loss after starting the season 5-0.
Trinity (Whitesville) vs Penfield
Senior Allie Graham led the charge on Wednesday for the Lady Raiders, tossing a complete game en route to the 7-0 shutout win.
Seventh grader Sophie Hatfield gave Trinity (Whitesville) it’s first lead of the game, getting on a two-out RBI triple to make it 1-0 in the bottom of the first. A triple from senior Allie Barnett led to a sacrifice fly for Graham the following inning, while an RBI single from senior Abby Payne made it 3-0 in the bottom of the third.
The Lady Raiders didn’t stop there either, grabbing four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to help them walk away with the 7-0 win. Payne, Hatfield and Graham all had an RBI each, while seventh grader Ella Morris led the way with a pair.
Graham was obviously instrumental in the circle as well, allowing no runs on three hits and three walks while striking out five. Trinity improves to 7-6 overall with their third straight win, as they now look to close out the Grand Strand Softball Classic strong against Brookville at 8 a.m. on Thursday.
Owensboro vs Reavis
The Lady Devils snapped a five-game losing streak on Wednesday, getting steady offense throughout the lineup with a massive day at the plate and in the circle for senior K’Asia Palmer helping Owensboro defeat Reavis 13-8.
Owensboro put up crooked numbers all game long, scoring three runs in the top of the first, second, fourth and fifth inning and added one more in the top of the seventh. The Lady Devils didn’t have their sharpest stuff in the field with seven errors, as sophomore Kirsten Tindle gave up just one earned run out of seven on seven hits and five strikeouts.
She managed to get the win though with the help of her offense, with a whopping seven RBIs from Palmer leading the way at the plate. She also tossed 2 ⅔ innings in the circle, allowing just one unearned run on one hit while striking out seven.
Helping Palmer at the plate was sophomore Ellington Embry, sophomore Hessi Johnson, freshman Reese Boswell and sophomore Addison Hill with one RBI each. The Lady Devils move to 2-7 overall with the win, as they now look to close out their spring break tournament strong against Oldham County and Caverna at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Thursday.
Owensboro Catholic vs Springboro, Woodford County
The Lady Aces woes continued on Wednesday, as they couldn’t muster up enough offense in their losses to Springboro and Woodford County at 8-7 and 13-3 respectively.
After trailing Springboro 3-1 early, Owensboro Catholic got a pair of runs in the top of the fourth and fifth to swing things their way at 5-3 going into the sixth. They grabbed one more in after a quiet sixth, but a walk, error and hit by pitch had the bases loaded with no outs for Springsboro in the bottom of the seventh.
A single the following at-bat cut it to 6-5, but another hit by pitch led to a sac fly that quickly knotted things up at 6-6 as Springsboro sent the game to extra innings. The Lady Aces got a run in the top of the eighth on a sac fly from sophomore Hannah Tignor, but it wasn’t enough.
After Owensboro Catholic squandered a bases loaded with two outs, a two-out walk for Springboro led to a walk-off two-run double that gave them the 8-7 win. Freshman Hannah Robbins tossed the first 3 ⅓ innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits and three walks while earning one strikeout.
Senior Brooke Hamilton pitched the last 4 ⅓ innings, picking up the loss while allowing three earned runs on four hits, while walking four and striking out four. She didn’t have much luck in their second game of the day either, allowing eight earned runs—nine total—on five hits and seven walks to go along with a pair of strikeouts in 2 ⅔ innings pitched in the 13-3 loss to Woodford County.
Robbins pitched the other 4 ⅓ innings, giving up two earned runs—four total—on two hits and four walks to go along with a pair of strikeouts. The Lady Aces gave up just 10 earned runs, with a trio of errors allowing runs to cross home on multiple occasions.
Owensboro Catholic has suffered five straight losses during spring break, as they will now look to turn things around after some time off before taking on Trinity (Whitesville) in the 3rd Region All-A Classic on Monday, April 10.
