Encore Musicals on Saturday will kick off their four-performance production of “The Sound of Music,” an award-winning Broadway musical based on a true story from the World War II era.
Shows are July 15-16 and 22-23 in Cannon Hall at the RiverPark Center. Both Saturday showtimes are 7 p.m., while the Sunday showtimes are 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online here, by calling 270-687-2779, or visiting the box office at 101 Daviess Street.
The Sound of Music is based on the 1949 memoir of Maria von Trapp and is set in Austria in 1938. Maria takes a job as governess to a large family while she decides whether to become a nun. She falls in love with the children and their widowed father, Captain von Trapp. The story follows the von Trapp family and their escape from occupied Austria during World War II.
The musical features many well-known songs including “Do-Re-Mi,” “My Favorite Things,” and the title song “The Sound of Music.”
The original Broadway production won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The story became more famous after the play was adapted as a 1965 film musical starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, winning five Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
The local production is directed by David Roberson. With Owensboro Health as the premier sponsor, Encore is able to perform with a live orchestra.
