University of Louisville Athletics inducted Owensboro native Justin Marks into its Hall of Fame on Saturday. Marks pitched for the Cardinal baseball program from 2007-09 before being selected by the Oakland A’s in the third round of the MLB draft.
The Hall of Fame ceremonies began with a banquet on Friday night, where Marks was one of eight athletes across several sports selected for the prestigious honor. On Saturday, the university recognized the inductees at halftime of the Louisville-Duke football game.
“Being inducted into the UofL Athletics Hall of Fame is a dream come true,” Marks said. “I was very fortunate during my time at UofL with opportunity, great coaches and teammates, and an abundance of support from family and friends.”
Marks graduated from Owensboro Catholic High School in 2006 before beginning his journey at UofL. When the Cards offered him a scholarshiped spot on the roster his junior year, he never visited another school.
After 3 years with the Cards, Marks took his talents to the big leagues, with stops across 7 organizations. His major league debut came on April 17, 2014, with the Kansas City Royals.
Even with 9 years in the majors, he still cherishes his time at the University of Louisville.
“This was a true trip down memory lane,” Marks said. “There is no shortage of memories playing baseball for the Louisville Cardinals between conference, regionals, super-regional championships, and playing at Rosenblatt Stadium in the College World Series. I’m grateful I could celebrate those memories on Friday night and thank those that were a part of it.”
After 9 years of playing professionally, he’s ecstatic to be home in Owensboro, raising a family with his wife, Jamie. Marks said the goal was always for them to return home when his tenure in the league was over.
“Celebrating this accomplishment with my family has been amazing,” he said. “We were able to spoil the kids some this weekend. They got to see where Dad went to school and played ball. My college coach even invited us up to his box for the football game.”
Marks attributes his success to his support system, work ethic, and willingness to tackle obstacles. He hopes his successes will inspire other youngsters from Owensboro who dream of a future in the sport.
“For kids with the same aspirations and dreams, I would encourage them to work hard and be prepared for when an opportunity comes around,” he said. “Don’t shy away from failure and challenges. Don’t get too high or too low. Surround yourself with good people, and enjoy the game.”
