A new barbershop with an art-inspired atmosphere and a team of experienced barbers is giving customers a fresh option for haircuts in Owensboro.
FVDE Barbershop — pronounced “Fade Barbershop” — opened June 1 with owner Jordan Thomas and a staff of eight barbers. Located near Walmart on KY 54, the shop offers everything from traditional cuts to modern styles, along with beard trims and other grooming services.
Thomas said his goal was to create a shop where he and his team could build something of their own.
“We just wanted to have our own place and do our own thing,” he said.
The shop’s name is spelled “FVDE” to incorporate the look of a pair of scissors in the logo, reflecting that the business specializes in both clipper fades and scissor cuts.
“We’re all pretty experienced barbers. We know what we’re doing,” Thomas said.
Unlike a traditional barbershop, Thomas designed the interior to resemble an art gallery, with each workstation featuring its own personality.
“I wanted there to be some life to it,” he said. “Each station has its own little story to tell.”
Thomas has been barbering for nearly eight years after making a career change from waiting tables. He said the profession appealed to his creative side.
“I’ve always had kind of a starving artist mentality,” he said. “I like barbering because I can start a project and get that instant gratification of finishing it. That’s what’s kept me in it.”
Thomas said today’s barbering industry has evolved well beyond basic buzz cuts, with customers increasingly requesting detailed, customized styles.
“It’s more than just buzz cuts now,” he said. “People want legitimate cuts.”
While walk-ins are welcome, Thomas recommends appointments for more extensive services. Customers can book through the Booksy app, with appointment prices varying by barber based on experience. Walk-in haircuts start at $25.
Thomas credited much of the shop’s early success to the experienced team that joined him in opening the business.
“That was the main reason why I even considered opening this place,” he said. “I knew the team I had coming with me. We’re very familiar and comfortable with each other, and I knew we’d take off flying once we moved over here.”
He also believes the location positions the business for continued growth, particularly as nearby road construction wraps up and residential development continues in the area.
“I think once the construction’s done, we’ll be in a better spot,” Thomas said. “There’s a lot of traffic through here, and I’ve had a lot of people tell me they’ve seen the shop.”
