Citizens who reside in the Yelvington precinct will go to the polls on May 21 to decide whether alcohol can be sold in their area. The wet/dry vote will be included on the primary ballot for that precinct.
The area is currently a “dry” precinct, meaning it does not allow for alcoholic beverages to be sold. More than 100 community members signed a petition to get the question on the ballot. According to state statute, at least 25% of eligible voters in the territory had to sign a petition to get the question on the ballot.
Judge-Executive Charlie Castlen signed an executive order on Thursday to allow the question to be added to the primary ballot. County Clerk Leslie McCarty said she can now submit the question to the Kentucky Board of Elections to get it added.
The question on the ballot will read: “Are you in favor of the Sale of Alcoholic Beverages in Precinct G103-Yelvington of Daviess County Kentucky?”
Only residents of the precinct will be vote on the question.
Other Daviess County precincts have petitioned for alcohol sales in recent years, including Masonville in 2021, Thorobred West in 2019, and Utica and Philpot East in 2018.
