The City is working to improve downtown’s aesthetic by renovating intersections along West 1st Street, with $1.1 million budgeted for the beautification project.
Director of Community Development Abby Shelton said the project spans 7 intersections from Poplar Street to Hanning Lane.
“They will be redone to tie together the previous work that’s been done downtown and in Owensboro, so that’ll continue to the English Park area,” she said.
The project was awarded to a Newburgh firm. Shelton said she has yet to be provided a start date but expects it to be before the end of the Fiscal Year. Engineering has approved all materials associated with the project.
With this project, the Northwest Neighborhood Revitalization has totaled $10.2 million in investments, of which $4.2 million are public funds.
That money has been spread across 267 total projects in the area, including 80 homeowner exterior remodels, 69 rental remodels, 61 downspout removals, and many more.
Shelton said that in total, $35.3 million has been invested across community development areas since the City started with BaptistTown in 1999.
Shelton also noted that the next revitalization area, a project that will run from 2025-2030, will be discussed at the next meeting. The new area has yet to be announced but has been proposed as one of three possible locations:
- Option 1 — north boundary of 4th Street, south boundary of Griffith Avenue, east boundary of Frederica Street, west boundary of Walnut Street
- Option 2 — north boundary of East 2nd Street, south boundary of East 9th Street, east boundary of Breckenridge Street, west boundary of Triplett Street.
- Option 3 — north boundary of West 4th Street, south boundary of West 5th Street Road, east boundary of Jeff Place, west boundary of Ridgewood and Danberry Streets.
