Graduates of Owensboro Community & Technical College’s Surgical Technology program have achieved a 100% first-time pass rate on the national certification exam for the 11th year in a row — a streak school officials say reflects the program’s rigorous training and strong career preparation.

“Eleven consecutive years with a 100% first-time pass rate represents an extraordinary standard of excellence,” said OCTC President Dr. Scott Williams. “This remarkable record demonstrates both the exceptional quality of our program and the dedication of our faculty and students.”

The 10-month Associate in Applied Science program combines classroom instruction with hands-on experience in operating rooms, equipping students with the skills needed to assist in surgical procedures. Graduates are eligible to take the national certification exam administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.

Program Coordinator Zara Basham said the consistent success is no accident.

“Our graduates enter a field with tremendous opportunities and excellent career prospects,” Basham said. “Surgical Technology offers a direct pathway into healthcare with meaningful work and strong job security.”

Surgical technologists play a key role in operating rooms, working alongside surgeons and nurses to prepare equipment, organize instruments and medications, and ensure a sterile environment throughout procedures.

“The demand for qualified surgical technologists continues to grow significantly in today’s healthcare landscape,” Basham said.

OCTC limits enrollment to maintain small class sizes and maximize hands-on training. Applications for the August 2026 cohort will open in February 2026. For more information, prospective students can contact Basham at [email protected] or 270-686-4650 to learn about requirements and deadlines.
