Owensboro had no early answers for Christian Academy of Louisville, falling behind and never fully recovering in their 35-0 loss in their home opener. The Centurions started with the ball and took only five plays to find the back of the endzone – a three-yard touchdown pass from Jackson Burke. After holding Owensboro to a three-and-out, CAL went on a long drive, capped off by Brodie Pfeiffer’s 12-yard touchdown pass.
CAL used two QBs throughout the night, rotating on each drive to great success.
“It’s difficult. When you watch film, you kind of know what both are good at and take away, but then it’s honestly the pieces around them too,” Owensboro Head Coach DaMarcus Ganaway said. “When they can find opportunities to get those guys the ball, and they can make guys miss or pick up first downs in chunk plays, it makes their life easier.”
Owensboro faced second and short, but an offensive holding penalty and a sack derailed the promising start. CAL blocked the ensuing punt, took over on the Devils five-yard line, and scored one play later.
Owensboro went three and out on their next two drives and entered halftime trailing 28-0. In the second half, CAL scored two more touchdowns to put the game away.
Red Devils QB DaMarcus Ganaway Jr. finished 4/13 for 25 yards, while Evan Hampton led the team in rushing yards with 13.
“Their effort is there, and I think when you’re playing a team with the caliber that we play and see some of the speed that we’ve seen, mentally we have to catch up,” Ganaway said. “The guys know their assignments, but once the ball is snapped, we’re losing a step and getting behind. We have to find our way back. A couple of mental errors and mistakes start to compound, and you get situations like this.”
Next week, Owensboro travels to Daviess County for an important City-County match up.
