In a return to his roots, Kyle Magill has been named the head coach of South Spencer High School’s boys basketball program. The longtime Owensboro Middle School boys’ basketball head coach, he spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach for the Red Devils under Rod Drake.

“I am very excited. I played there growing up, and I am from Rockport,” Magill said. “This is more than just a job for me. It is personal, and I get to go home. I grew up watching South Spencer basketball, and I also played there. I am looking forward to getting started and getting this program built to where it needs to be.”

South Spencer’s fourth all-time leading scorer and all-time three-point leader, Magill graduated from the program in 2003, and after spending a year at the University of Southern Indiana, he entered the coaching world. He spent a year as the coach of South Spencer’s freshmen and then later joined the JV coaching staff.

In the 2009-2010 school year, he and his family moved to Owensboro, where he became a teacher at Estes Elementary. That same year, he was named the head coach of Owensboro Middle School’s basketball team – a role he held until 2023 – winning a State Championship in 2018.

He joined the Red Devils for the 2023-2024 season, spending three years on Rod Drake’s staff.

“Rod Drake is a living legend,” Magill said. I just watched him in the day-to-day, and you kind of learn a few things, some tips and pointers. He is always willing to talk and share. Since he knew that I was going to get the job, he told me to reach out if I had any questions. He has always been there, and I appreciate Rod a lot.”

While Magill acknowledged that his scheme will be player-personnel driven, he sees himself as more offensive minded.

“I like the scouting approach, and I like to see what the other team is good at and try to take that away,” Magill said. “It is kind of like playing chess. I like the offense. I enjoy building a game plan and putting players in position to be successful, where we can score easy baskets or get open looks.”

Magill has always aspired to become a head coach at the high school level and he welcomes the upcoming challenge.

“I am really excited,” Magill said. “I am excited to get to work with the players and build a team that the community can be proud of. Be tough, disciplined, unselfish, and just compete.”
