For the first time since 2006, McLean County baseball is the 10th District Champion, shutting out Muhlenberg County 2-0 to end the title drought. Layden Bozarth took the mound for the Cougars striking out seven over seven shutout innings, while Jayden Taylor had the team’s lone RBI.
“We played pretty well tonight,” McLean County Head Coach Darren Lynam said. “Layden Bozarth was phenomenal on the mound, and we got a big two-out hit from Jayden Taylor to give us a first-inning lead. Those two, along with Corbin Martin, Jaelin Groves, and Brooks Lynam, led us all year.”
The Cougars struck first in the bottom of the first when Jayden Taylor singled to drive in Jaelin Groves. McLean County doubled their lead in the bottom of the fifth when Kaysen Bozarth scored on an error.
Pitching with a lead from the second inning on, Bozarth wheeled his way in and out of jams. Muhlenberg County’s best scoring opportunity came in the top of the seventh when Kam Gettings led off the inning with a double.
Bozarth retired the next two batters via flyout and strikeout, before issuing a two-out walk to Cam Mahlosky. Five pitches later, the senior retired Kade Tippett to end the threat and secure the win.
This marked the Cougars 24th win on the season, the most wins in a season in program history. Having also advanced to the 3rd Region Tournament, the draw show is scheduled for this Saturday morning.
