After their game was delayed due to weather from Monday to Tuesday, the Lady Cougars softball season has finally come to an end, falling to Muhlenberg County 13-0 in the 10th District Tournament.
“We played much better against Muhlenberg County than we did earlier in the regular season,” McLean County Head Coach Rileigh Bobo said. “Ady Estes, Kaydence Stokes, and Kyra Nichols each collected hits, while Ava McCarty added a sacrifice bunt to help move runners. We put the ball in play and created opportunities offensively, but we just couldn’t come up with the timely hits needed to push runs across the plate.”
Kaydence Stokes reached base via a walk to start the game, and Kyra Nichols singled with one out, but a double play ball ended the early scoring threat. Muhlenberg County responded in the bottom of the first with four runs and led 5-0 in the second before the game entered a lengthy weather delay.
Once play resumed, Muhlenberg County added five total runs in the second, and three in the third.
Adalynn Estes, Nichols, and Stokes had the team’s three hits, while Geel started on the circle. She pitched three innings, while Ava McCarty threw an inning in relief.
“Maci Geel pitched well and competed hard in the circle, and Ava McCarty also stepped in to throw an inning when we needed her. Muhlenberg County did a good job of taking advantage of a few of our mistakes and capitalizing in key moments.”
With this loss, McLean County finishes the season 7-16.
“From the beginning of the season to the end, we saw real improvement offensively as we started hitting the ball harder and more consistently,” Bobo said. “We also improved our win total from last season, which is something this team should be proud of. Even through some tough losses, this group continued to compete, showed a lot of growth, and never quit.”
